As Jem, Scanlen’s facial expressions often capture the confusion of that - how a prayer can feel reverent and worshipful, and it can also feel like whispering a delicious secret to someone who understands you. The shame informs the pleasure, and vice versa. It’s because of the secrecy of Jem’s coming-of-age, perhaps, that allows her to grow in this specific way. I remember having conversations with Greta about what she would have done if Beth hadn't gone so soon, and I think she would have pursued her piano playing more … But Beth was always of the belief that her creative skills… she never felt the desire to perform her creative skills to anybody.” If she had been restricted in the way Jem is, with a family who disapproved of her passions, maybe she would have felt that desire more, Scanlen muses. Greta's adaptation of Little Women allowed me more room to explore her creative passions too. Beth, perhaps, would fit most neatly into the world of The Starling Girl. “As I work more, I do notice that I'm drawn to particular stories and I think that inherently they are often female-led and something that all those three have in common is that the female experience is a very big theme,” Scanlen says. The 24-year-old Australian actress is most known for two pivotal career roles: Beth March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Amma Crellin in the HBO limited series Sharp Objects.
